Extraordinary 1954 Esskay Meats Dick Kokos with a clear 1953-54 Briggs Mantle image on the reverse! With only ten plate appearances for the inaugural Baltimore Orioles to his credit, Richard Jerome Kokoszka is still undoubtedly one of the most desirable examples from the 1954 Esskay Meats issue. The only known specimen to have been offered for public sale, this Kokos is improbably adorned by a portion of a 1953-54 Briggs complete box on the reverse. Being that the printing vendor distributed boxes for the Esskay, Briggs and Hunter’s Wieners trading card promotions, a loading error is the probable cause for this interesting mishap. A portion of the Briggs trademark and the New York Yankees team identification is immediately visible. On the bottom edge of the reverse, a lavender backdrop and a Yankees cap is recognizable. Upon matching photographs from the series, conclusive identification of a youthful Mickey Mantle as the subject is confirmed! The card was meticulously culled and displays moderate creasing along with traces of orange bordering on the bottom and left edges. The “head and shoulders” portrait is clear, depicting Kokos emerging from a multi-colored dusk backdrop. In a hobby where terms such as “unique” and “one-of-a-kind” are tossed around all too loosely, we can state with confidence that such an Esskay/Briggs player combination will likely never surface again.
