Description

"In this corner ..." From the early days of pugilism, this unique novelty is a testament to the global popularity of "The Sweet Science." Produced in France likely at the turn of the century, this two-player "Les Boxeurs" amusement pits (2) fighters against one another in a battle of left and right uppercuts. The wooden combatants stand 5-5/8"-tall and fight on their respective wooden bases of 6-1/4 x 2-1/8". Marionette-like in both composition and operation, the fighters deliver blows powered by a crankshaft device that inserts at the side of the base. Decidedly rare pieces, the boxers are hand painted to show facial features, gloves, shoes and trunks. All elements are complete and included, though the rubber bands, of course, are replacements. Accompanying is the original box, the lid of which is home to an original instructions sheet with proclamations of "Modele Depose" (registered design) and "Haute Nouveaute" (high capacity). The box shows expected wear, and the lid has separation at its corners. A vintage price tag from a Paris establishment is adhered to the bottom of the box. While the discovery of any of the individual parts of such a vintage toy would represent a rare find, the fact that the entire keepsake is present and fully functional makes for a "one-of-a-kind" find.
