As hardware goes, this 1899 pugilism prize is as impressive as it gets. From the sport's bare-knuckles days, this sterling silver medallion flaunts an ostentatious design fitting an award bestowed upon one who braves the punishment inherent to the squared circle. All told, the piece measures just over five inches in length. Two banner-like displays are fastened (via chain and wire components) atop the piece. The second of those "banners" is engraved 140 LBS BOXING" with a Bald Eagle perched atop the proclamation. The highlight, of course, is the round medallion with raised fighter likenesses (complete with ring and ropes in the backdrop). Surrounding this detail is a blue ribbon-like banner with a "NATIONAL ASS'N OF AMATEUR ATHLETES OF AMERICA" printed legend. Ornate finery accents the piece, and a badge dated "1899" is centered atop the centerpiece. Minor oxidation appears on the reverse, as does a "R. STOLL N.Y. - STERLING" stamping. Truly a one-of-a-kind fight relic.
