This unusual gathering of autographs celebrates authors of unthinkable accomplishments, and spans ten decades in doing so. The medium is an off-white Spalding "Babe Ruth Home Run Special" sphere, a vintage specimen that was issued in 1929. Complimenting the Bambino’s facsimile scripting, Ruth (d.1948) headlines the signatures (as usual) with his unmistakable penmanship. Executed on the sweet spot, Ruth's blue fountain pen signature is minimally affected by signs of handling, but is still visible in its completeness, maintaining ("5") strength and clarity. On the east panel, the autograph of Lou Gehrig (d.1941) has faded and warrants ("3") assessment, though the upper-case "L" and "G" leave no doubt as to the author. On the north panel, former perennial stolen base champion Ben Chapman (d.1993) has rendered a signature that resonates ("6") quality. Flanking Ruth on the south panel, Cal Ripken, Jr. has made this an orb for the ages with a blue ballpoint penning that shows ("8") potency. Full photo LOA from James Spence Authentications.
